A film review
THE REVENANT
The Revenant by director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is a biographic western- thriller movie which has 553 million USD box office gross. The leading actors of the movie whose scenario is adopted by Michael Punke’s novel in 2002 are Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson. The story of the movie revolves around Hugh Glass who is experienced trapper works for a company hunts animals for their fur. One day, at that place where they hunt, there are others both Frenchs and Native Americans. After a hunt day, Glass gets hurt horribly by a grizzly bear, is left for dead by his crew for not slowing them. However, as he knows the territory better than everyone else, he holds on to life, manages to survive and recover himself slowly and insistently. Because, as we can understand after watching the movie, he has a quite acceptable reason to keep himself alive. I completely like this movie in terms of it’s setting, script and it’s casting and that is why I would recommend everyone to watch it.
The first thing I like much in this movie is it’s setting. All this story is mostly filmed in the forest, an extensive area near Calgary in Alberta, Canada. In my opinion, the harsh conditions of the winter make the movie more realistic and thus the reality of the feelings can easily pass to the viewers. Harmony of the environment and the events is quite integrated. The actors reflect every detail of the emotions that they want to show the viewers how the conditions are tough. For instance, at the scene when Glass and the other Natives choose a deer to feed themselves, they just eat uncooked bloody meat with their hands. Otherwise, they wouldn’t stay alive. Nevertheless, what else could they do at the times 1823's in America? And also the scene in which during the harsh storm, Glass disembowels the dead horse and goes inside to the belly of this horse and lay down there to keep himself warm till the storm ends. This scene is I think another effective scene in that survival movie. He tries every mind-bending way to survive at these killing conditions. So, it makes the movie more absorbing for me.
The second thing that I love in this movie is it’s a quite basic but strong script. The Revenant handled the heroic struggle to survive which is happened in the 19th century at the border of America, not only takes under review a relationship between son and dad but also the power of honor, justice, belief, and family. In the scenes which Glass and his son share special moments with oneanother, they are always trusting themselves and sustaining each other. It shows us how the power of love, family, and honor is important. While at the time his son’s face get burned, Glass says to his boy that keep fighting as long as you breathe which means never give up at the beginning of the movie. I think it could be one of the most meaningful parts of the movie. Because it gives the viewer exactly the same power as Hugh Glass gives to his son. This kind of inspirational sayings is always kind of assistant to the scriptwriter to make his story more intense and actual, especially if it is wanted to make viewers impressed.
Lastly, casting is another point that I liked much. In the movie, not only Leonardo DiCaprio very suitable for the leading role but also Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson and Will Poulter fit quite well into their roles. I think actor choice is so important that it determines the success of the movie. And I couldn’t imagine any other actor plays the character of Hugh Glass but Leonardo DiCaprio after watching the movie. Because in the scenes which the grizzly bear attacks to Glass, Leonardo comes through this role successfully, and dont think any other actor would accomplish it like Leonardo did. Also when he gets hurt badly, he couldn’t speak, suffers severely. His acting is so perfectly fitting on this challenging role that the viewer could nearly feel exactly the same pain pressure he deals with while it is watched. In that vein, Tom Hardy is the same; his acting in some scenes, especially at the one he tries to kill Glass, always teasing with him, he gives the impression of 'I am the bad guy' to the viewer thoroughly.
To sum up, The Revenant a breath-taking two and a half hour Western thriller movie is definitely according to my taste for it’s quite a successful script, casting, and setting. With these combinations, I think this huge production is worth-watching. So you should better try watching it at the first opportunity you will have.
