An essay over the novel of A Passage to India

 A PASSAGE TO INDIA

Having adapted to a movie in 1984, A Passage To India actually is a novel written by E.M. Forster in 1920s. Being chosen one of  the hundred big masterpieces of the 20th century by the Modern Library, A Passage To India deals with the relations between the English and the native population of  India during the colonial period in which India was ruled by England at that times. Bearing a lot of generalisation made by both Indians and English, this movie  shows the England's power upon the 1920's India, the impacts of the religion over the people's life and how the India reflect its reaction to English imperialism. The leading subjects of this movie are colonialism, imperialism, racism and prejudgment. The attitude of Victorian era middle class English to Indians is handled with a perfect irony. And I will be touching on the elements in which how imperialism is symbolised in my following sentences.

First of all, colonialism is pictured by the concept of prejudgment. Among the leading characters in the movie, Dr. Aziz is charged with the attempt of a sexual assault inasmuch as the panic attack of an English lady, Adela Quested who is going to marry with the city Magistrate of Chandrapore, Ronny Heaslop. Though this accusition is completely groundless, the current court's process who is English also, is run as if his offense is already acknowledged. They all believe without any interrogate that Dr. Aziz is an assaulter. The reason for this is their way of belief that there is an absolute possibility of an Indian committing such a crime. And this prejudgment culminates in a revolutionary riot because the public cannot accept that. Also, as one can see the dividing of the characters are intensely based-upon the Indian-English stereotype, the racism can easily be identified as subhead or the results of the prejudgment, or vice verse.

Secondly,a sheer imperialism is showed with the absolute power of England over India. England's political and economic strength paves the way for dominating India; both politic and economic. This superiority makes Indians suffer and revolt all the time because England's available power, is not constructive but destructive for them. Unemployment, society disorders, weak economy and broken welfare are the pathetic consequences of the screened colonialism in that highly important historical movie. Also, some generalisations made by both nations are worthy of note. One of the most famous prejudice generalizations in the novel is the saying of “Madam, this is mosque, you have no right here at all; you should have taken off your shoes; this is a holy place for moslems”. In this warning of Dr. Aziz to the Mrs. Moore, he thinks that she does not respect the place and she is not like him at all, but at the end they become friends, respect their feelings and love each other regardless of any discrepancy. Even though there are colonialist characters such as Rony Heaslop or else, we come across with the others who oppose the idea of the imperialism such as Mrs. Moore and Mr. Fielding. It shows that English and Indian can become friends irrespective of comparing any identity.

To sum up, A Passage To India is a movie that concerns about the power expansion of England over India. The concepts such as imperialism, colonialism and discrimination are treated gracefully and perfectly. This work basically makes the audience think about the question: whether could be or not to be friends with the people of exploited india. And the answer is quite clear according to the movie, the nation who victimized, never regard someone as a friend.
